[Cláudio Dias] 1966 Batmobile

We have another Batman movie released this year, with yet again another reboot and another actor to reprise the role as the world's greatest detective. To commemorate this I've put up few posts for Batman ride - the Batmobile. First, lets go all the way back to the first ever full-length movie of the Batman in the 1960s.

The 1966 Batman: The Movie is a film based on the Batman television series; starred by Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin. It was released between the first and second season of the TV series. William Dozier is responsible for bringing the cape crusader to a live action adaptation. He acted as both executive producer and narrator for the TV series, and his 60s Batman are now called by the Bat-fans as the Dozierverse. Adam West's Batman is the most campy version of the Batman, as the titular role make a parody of mid-1960s culture. It was also the brightest Batman movie ever, which is getting dimmer for every new Batman movie iteration.

The Batmobile from the 1966-1968 TV series and film is based on a 1955 concept car by Ford's Lincoln brand - the Lincoln Futura. It was designed by Ford's lead stylists and was hand-built in Italy at a staggering cost of $250,000 (that would be $2.4 mil in todays value). The car was never went into production, and sold to an auto customizer - George Barris, for a mere $1. The Futura sat behind his garage for many years before he was contracted to build the Batmobile. He went on to modify the car into the iconic Batmobile that we know today.
