A spin-off show is a show that is derived from already existing works (usually popular and successful ones) that offer more details or different aspects from the original show. The MS Gundam series is no exception to this as there have already been spin-off shows since the early years of the franchise. We can see this in the form of MS Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket which sets in the final days of the One Year war; and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory which sets in between the event of the original MS Gundam and Zeta Gundam. Both series serve as side stories to the main Gundam franchise continuity in the Universal Century. As side stories, they have different characters and main mobile suits, and the plot usually does not cross paths with the main story, albeit some main events are always mentioned to mark the series' position in the timeline.

The same thing happened with the ever-famous Gundam SEED series, though the spin-off does not fruitage into a full animation series, but a serial Manga instead. The interesting thing about the Astray manga series is that it not only provides additional narratives but also complements the main SEED stories, usually by filling up plot holes and time skips.
