Having the early success and the upper hand over the Federation in the dawn of the One Year War, the Zeon eventually tasted defeats in the hand of the Gundam & the GMs. The Federation trump card? The beam weaponry on their mass-produced mobile suits overwhelmed the Zakus and the Rick Doms. The Zeon soon realized that they need to start providing beam rifles to their forces to even the odds and gain back the advantage. However, all of their current mobile suits are designed for ballistic weapons, and their power output is incapable of handling beam weapons. Therefore the Zeon went back to the drawing board to design the ultimate version of a mass-production mobile suit, the strongest of them all at the time - the MS-14A Gelgoog. 

The Gelgoog not only surpassed the aging Zakus and Rick Doms, but its superiority is also evenly matched with the RX-78-2 Gundam itself. But then, even with the Gelgoog, the Zeon's defeat is clearly imminent during the final days of the war. By the time the Gelgoog is put into production, the Federation is already knocking at the front door of Zeon's final defense line at A Baoa Qu. The Gelgoog will be such a case of too late, too few, to turn the tide of the war into Zeon's favor at that moment.
