In the last post, I talked about the Guntank, and today let's talk about its sibling - the RX-77-2 Guncannon. The Guncannon is one of the three prototypes under the Federation's top-secret military project - Operation V (short for Operation Victory). It is an upgrade from the tank design of the RX-75 with usable limbs. This greatly increases its mobility and flexibility in combat as compared to the Guntank. The Guncannon is equipped with two 240mm cannons on both shoulders as its main weapon. Unlike the long-range Guntank, Guncannon serves as a mid to close-range fire support. Interestingly, the Guncannon donned the same type of armor as the Gundam, which is luna titanium alloy armor. And while Gundam needs a shield as protection, the Guncannon simply doesn't need one as it has thicker armor. But because of this it becomes heavier than the Gundam and reduces its mobility.  

As you might have noticed, the three prototypes of Operation V are developed for different purposes. The Guntank for long-range, Guncannon for mid-range, and the Gundam for mid and close combat. However the mass-production version of the Gundam, the RGM-79 GM become the Federation's mobile suit of choice for the war and was produced in great numbers. Only a handful of the Guncannon's mass-production type - the RX-77D ever sees the battle, partly due to its late introduction into the One Year War.
