Gundam SEED Destiny - Cosmic Era (CE)

It's been months since I last wrote about Gundam SEED - the popular Gundam TV series that re-ignite the popularities of the MS Gundam franchise & started a new era of Gundam fandom. 

Seeing the success of SEED, the studio decided to continue with the second season in the CE timeline with SEED Destiny. And how the SEED is a remake of the original MS Gundam, Destiny follows the same formula as a remake version of MS Zeta Gundam. Or so the original plan, I think. What exactly happened is that we get yet another SEED  - similar storylines, similar characters, similar Gundams, and so on. We even got the same animation footage from SEED recycled over and over again. Despite such a divisive reception from the fans, Destiny is extremely popular in Japan. In fact, it sold over a million copies of DVDs, its soundtracks are topping the charts, & the toy sales are very good. 

So what exactly is the problem with Destiny? Let's make a list, shall we?

1. Recycle plot and storyline from SEED. Meaning you have to watch another 50 episodes of basically the same story again.

2. Recycle characters and Gundam design - Shinn Asuka looks like Kira, Impulse looks like Freedom, etc. 

3. Recycle stock animation. Over, and over, and over, again.

4. Overpowered main character - yes, it's you - Lord Kira.

5. Overpowered main character's Gundam - yes, it's Lord Kira again.

6. Unexplainable plot holes - Lord Kira survived twice; first from a direct explosion to his face, and second, from a nuclear explosion. Yes, you read that right. A NUCLEAR explosion.

7. Too many Gundams with identical/similar designs.

8. What is the purpose of this series again? Oh yeah, to sell more toys.

Of course, some of this happened due to problems during the production and the director/writer tried too hard to please the fan. So there's that.
